BY THE BEST-SELLING AUTHOR OF THE IRISH INHERITANCE

July 1, 1916. The Somme, France.

A British Officer prepares to go over the top on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

March 28, 2016. Manchester. England.

Genealogical investigator Jayne Sinclair, a former police detective, is commissioned by a young teacher to look into the history of his family. The only clues are a medallion with purple, white and green ribbons, and an old drawing of a young woman.

Her quest leads to a secret buried in the trenches of World War One for over 100 years.

Who was the real heir to the Lappiter millions?

From the author of the best selling, The Irish Inheritance, comes a gripping new book revealing family secrets hidden in the fog of war.

The Somme Legacy is the second book in the Jayne Sinclair genealogical mystery series, but it can be enjoyed as a stand-alone story.

The Somme Legacy A Jayne Sinclair Genealogical Mystery Jayne Sinclair Genealogical Mysteries Book 2 eBook M J Lee

I enjoyed this journey through time as much as the last one, the horrors of war notwithstanding. Getting to know Jayne Sinclair was as entertaining as the genealogy mystery. Can someone actually make a living as a genealogy researcher? Never thought it would be as dangerous as it appears to be for Jayne. Good reading!

The Somme Legacy A Jayne Sinclair Genealogical Mystery Jayne Sinclair Genealogical Mysteries Book 2 eBook M J Lee Reviews

In a race against time, Jayne Sinclair is hired to prove that her clients' ancestors were actually married during the First World War. The story moves back and forth between Jayne's research in the present and lives of David Russell and Rose Clarke just prior to and during the war. But when David is killed at the Somme, his family refuses to acknowledge Rose or the son she bears. Rose later spends fifty years in an asylum, casting a shadow over not just her son's life, but also her grandson, Richard's. Richard is at first reluctant to authorize Jayne's research, but his son Mark insists. Fascinating and fast-moving, this book is hard to put down. Interesting characters and an engrossing plot add up to a very enjoyable read. Highly recommended.
I look forward to reading more from this author. The story makes you feel like you are part of history and you begin to think that it could have actually happened this way. This story made me angry with some of the characters and fall in love with others. Really good!
I love that more books are being written about WWI. It was such a devastating war and for that it needs to be remembered and immortalized. This book follows the love story of a simple London shop girl who meets a lord, falls in love and marries him. However, when she needs to prove her marriage, she is unable to produce paper proof.
Current day Daisy's heir are still trying to prove her marriage and hire genealogist, retired police office, Jayne Sinclair to help them.
This author is new to me and I plan to read her earlier book also.
This is the second book in Jayne Sinclair series as exciting if not more so than the first. Great character development. It's hard to put it down. I eagerly await the next book
This is the first kindle book of many I have read in the past four years that nearly brought me to tears . Very evocative with many telling passages. It is a believable story I will probably reread. Very few editorial flaws or dubious verbiage. Highly recommended. I spent time researching the Battle is the Somme. Recommended to anyone interested in WW 1.
As much as I enjoyed the first book in this series, The Irish Inheritance, The Somme Legacy is even better. This second book makes for compulsive reading. Not only does it have a moving love story, in its dual timelines (1916 and 2016) the author gives us a real taste of life during World War I both in the trenches and in hospitals and homes away from the front lines. The history of the suffragettes is also touched upon, and Lee successfully manages to weave all this history into his story without dulling it or slowing the pace. He also creates some memorable characters. Rose will stay with me for a long time, and Herbert Small and the Russell family are the sort of villains that readers love to hate.

Rose's life as a suffragette and as a woman forced to live out her life in an asylum is the beacon in The Somme Legacy. As Jane learns Rose's story, she refuses to give up her search for the truth-- Rose's truth-- that everyone refused to believe a century ago. Rose's plight also shows how having a person declared insane can completely change the dynamics of a family with lasting effects even a century later.

Jayne's investigation is fascinating. Yes, readers learn about inheritance laws in the UK, but it's how she methodically works to track down the missing documents she needs that draws readers ever deeper into the story. Her job is an extremely difficult one because-- unbeknownst to her, an obstacle course has been deliberately set up so that she will fail. With my sympathies firmly for Rose, M.J. Lee certainly had me cheering on Jayne Sinclair as she works against the clock to prove Rose was right.

Jayne's background as a police officer helps her in more ways than one-- even providing a needed bit of humor now and again. With this second book being even better than the first, I can't wait to get my hands on the third-- The American Candidate!
This novel is just as good as Lee's last Jayne Sinclair book. It gives great detail of the suffragettes as well as the sufferings of the soldiers in WWI and the Battle of the Somme. Couldn't put the book down by the time I was halfway through it!
