Prior to the wars on the continent Major Bartholomew Blackpool was the toast of the ton: Handsome to a fault, charismatic, popular, skilled at horsemanship, boxing, dancing, and a notorious rogue with the ladies. He returns home a shattered shell of a man with one of his legs shot off and thinking he will never be able to do any of his former activities, especially being the consummate lover of ladies. Childhood friend Miss Daphne Vaughn is being forced into a marriage by her heavy-handed guardian, to the point of threatening her with Bedlam or Debtor's prison. The major comes to her rescue to enter into a fake betrothal until she can reach her majority age and gather up her meager inheritance. Neither adamantly wants marriage and they begin a risky dance to see who will "cry off" first. The Major Faux Fiancee A Historical Regency Romance Novel Dukes of War Book 4 edition by Erica Ridley Romance eBooks Reviews
The premise was great, right up my alley since I love historicals with some angst and a flawed hero. Although at times he could be self-indulgent and obtuse, he didn't disappoint. The heroine however... good heavens, she was annoying. Her whole gig is that she write letters in support of various nebulous causes. That's it. she writes letters. She doesn't go anywhere or do anything, she writes letters. And she's so dang self-righteous about it! Later in the book the hero does more for her causes in a few actions than all her sacrificial letter-writing does in the whole book. Her character does grow a bit during the story, but not enough to get to the point I rooted for her. There was rarely a point I didn't want to slap her silly. Other books in the series may be better choices because the writing was good.
The Major's Faux Fiancée is a lot of repetitive claptrap until pages 228-230 when Daphne's character becomes real and dimensional. Prior to that it's a lot of handwringing on her part as to how everyone leaves her and her life will only have meaning if she can make a difference to an array of 'causes.' The wearying repetition for Bartholomew is how he is a 'half man' because he lost his leg in the Napoleonic wars and how he doesn't deserve happiness because he couldn't save his twin brother. Don't get me wrong, I like my stories with a bit of angst but this was to a large degree, a veritable cesspool of whining self-indulgence.
Bottom line Until the pages noted above and the scene where Bartholomew scales a balcony to win Daphne, this barely rise to
The 2 star level. Because I finished it and because of those two scenes it rises to a 3 star level.
A good, interesting idea for a plot, developed so poorly, that I cannot give it more than a lukewarm "it was OK" three star rating. Usually I reward with an extra star all the books that are a "stand alone" titles. But I cannot make this one a four star book. It was stretched, boring, historically unrealistic, just no. Heroes were flat, at times stupid. Not very likable. I found myself flipping pages to get to the finish line. I will give this author another chance, I have another book of her downloaded on a free promotion, but if it isn't any better, that's it for me. Even for "free" books I need to pay with my time. And this book wasn't worth it.
A wonderful story of two people overcoming feelings of inadequacy & realizing they are worthy of love. Erica Ridley writes a moving story of 2 wounded souls finding their way with each other & learning to love themselves in the process.
Major Bartholomew Blackpool has returned from the war without a leg & without his twin brother. Feeling he is less of a man & not wanting society's pity he has closed himself off from everyone. Not leaving his home, not receiving visitor's & burning all correspondence. After all even his mother hasn't come to see him since he's returned & the one time his father came he left without saying a word. If that doesn't cry failure then Bartholomew doesn't know what does. Until the day that his butler decides to read the name on each correspondence before putting it in the fire. The day the letter from Miss Daphne Vaughn arrives asking for his help with her guardian by pretending to be her fiancee until she reaches her majority in a month.
Ever since her mother died when Daphne was young, she has felt as if she didn't matter. After all her father, the vicar, has ignored her all her life. Realizing that she enjoyed helping people & those she helped appreciate her, at least for a little while, she decides that is her life mission. Putting herself wholeheartedly into this she realizes that she will never marry...if she marries she will not have the time to devote to these causes & what will become of these people without her. Until her father dies & she is left in the custody of a cousin, a cousin who is a pirate of all things. Deciding that he needs to marry Daphne off to rid himself of her responsibility he gives her until the end of the week to chose a husband & a month to marry or he will send her to Bedlam. Panicking, Daphne writes to the one man she knows will help, the one man she has adored all her life & could easily love if she would let herself.
Through the weeks leading to Daphne's birthday in which she will gain her majority & be out from under her guardians rule, Daphne & Bartholomew play at being engaged. But is it all a farce? What will happen when they each realize they love each other? Will Daphne be able to let go of her causes? Will Bartolomew be able to let go of his demons? What will it take for them to convince the other that they can have everything?
I adore Ms. Ridley's writings! The Major's Faux Fiancee will touches the heart & you can't help but admire the strength of the characters! 5+ rating in my opinion!
